Shoulder shrug and slide
Purpose: To improve upper thoracic and scapular mobility, and its three dimensional control on the chest wall, by engaging shoulder patterns 1, 3 and 4.
Benefits: This helps head, neck, shoulder, and upper limb pain syndromes. A common finding is increased tension over the front chest and shoulder accompanied by poor scapular control. This exercise is easy to do during the day – especially when at the computer.It can also be done in side lying, which is nice for someone with acute shoulder pain.
Compensations: Gripping the hand and tensing the arm (which also tenses and shortens the neck – and the back of the armpit). The scapula does not slide freely over the chest wall and there is little movement through the upper thorax and shoulder girdle – particularly into retraction.
