To Think With Words: Indo-European Zones of Thinking
In order to understand Heidegger, we must learn to perform two operations, to which the aforementioned peculiarities of his thinking lead us. In the first place, we must listen attentively to his language.
Heidegger thinks not with concepts or categories, but with words. Not with ideas, not with principles, not with fundamentals, but with the roots of words.
His thinking is verbal and radical [i.e., rootbased.
The word in Russian is the adjectival form of the noun "root"; корневое].
This must be taken into consideration when touching upon his texts.
Their reading and comprehension demands a certain (let it be an initial) linguistic and philosophical preparation(1).
Moreover, we, like Heidegger himself in the case of the German language, must learn to think with the words and roots of our own native Russian language.
Therefore, when reading Heidegger, we simultaneously:
— Listen attentively (to the German words);
— Comprehend (the meaning, the intention, the intension of the thought);
— Translate (looking for Russian matches in words, capable of transmitting the meaning).
The reading of Heidegger must become for us a road to our own Russian language as a language of thought, a language of philosophy.
This puts before us a serious problem.
The thing is that if we have a good look at the area of diffusion of Indo-European languages, we shall see that each large linguistic group has its own philosophical systems with a more or less developed apparatus, based on the disclosure of the philosophical significance of the basic words of this language, either entirely or in part interspersed with the borrowing of concepts from close languages.
1. Nietzsche called one of his works "We Philologists" (Nietzsche F. Collected Works. V. 3 T. 3. M: REFL, 1994).
The reading of Heidegger's philosophy is a matter precisely for "philologists" in the Nietzschean sense.
