Why should we take Low GI food ?
The purpose of a Glycemic Index (GI) diet is to eat carbohydrate-containing foods that are less likely to cause large increases in blood sugar levels (insulin spike). The diet could be a means to lose weight and prevent chronic diseases related to obesity such as diabetes.
The GI is a relative ranking of carbohydrate in foods according to how they affect blood glucose levels. Carbohydrates with a low GI value are more slowly digested, absorbed and metabolised and cause a lower and slower rise in blood glucose level.
All carbohydrates are eventually broken down into sugar also known as GLUCOSE, but the more complex the carbohydrate, the more steps it has to go through in the body to become a sugar molecule & then be released into your blood to provide fuel for your body.
Norms :
• Low GI: 1 to 55
• Medium GI: 56 to 69
• High GI: 70 and higher
Example:
• Low GI: carrots, kidney beans, chickpeas, vegetables, apples, berries, lentils and bran cereals
• Medium GI: Sweet corn, bananas, raw pineapple, raisins, chapatti, multigrain, oat bran or rye bread
• High GI: White rice, Noodles, white bread and potatoes, watermelon, roti canai
