In the case of word to image translation and film adaptation, according to different skopos, the translation from literature to film could be roughly divided into three classifications: the loose, the faithful and the literal, as are defined by Giannetti for adaptations. The first and the third classifications constitute two poles of film adaptation with their respective emphases on the target text (culture) and the source text (culture), resulting from their different skopos. Yet the faithful one, as Giannetti proposes, attempts to “recreate the literary source in filmic terms”, trying to be true to the spirit of the literary work; the means to achieve such a skopos is to preserve “most of the important characters and scenes as well as the tone of the original”.
In this way and under the guidance of such a skopos, attainment of an ideal reconciliation type of “intertextual coherence” will be enabled with both recreation in form and preservation in spirit of the source text; such a translation (adaptation) will be endowed with strengths of both the source text and the target performance.
