英语单词考古之——“y”代替“i”
如视频4所示——外国小朋友和老师在拼写单词sky的时候,都不约而同的说了一句「英语单词不能以字母“i”结尾」,至于为什么,他们没有讲。
#伯爵冷知识# 于是我找到了图1的语言学家➠阿纳托利·利伯曼 (Anatoly Liberman) ,他是 《英语词源分析词典:简介》和关于单词起源 《牛津词源学家》的作者。
如图2所示,他对「英语单词不能以字母“i”结尾」给出了考古解释——在古代手稿里,字母“i”写出来太小了,容易与其他字母和数字混淆,或者说容易被忽略覆盖,于是当时的英国抄写员就想了两个办法——
1️⃣直接将i变成大写I,这也演变成了后世第一人称经常大写的规则。
2️⃣抄写员在单词末尾将i替换为y;这样就看起来非常明显,和不会混淆数字1或者字母j等。
这也解释了为什么很多复数/比较级形式会将y复古成ie,比如dry➠drier, driest,fly➠flies……
还有人名的亲昵称呼也会进行类似的复古➠Johnny ~ Johnnie
