Minority Awareness
Hong Kong is a pluralistic society. Apart from the local Chinese population, minorities such as East and South Asians account for about 4% of the population (300,000). Many of them were born and raised in Hong Kong, and they are no different from my great grandfathers who have settled in Hong Kong in their early years. For generations, Hong Kong has become their new home, and sometimes their Cantonese is even more fluent than their 'native dialect'.
The government has been committed to promoting multiculturalism and harmony among those of different cultures in recent years. This is done by providing various support and services to ethnic groups with equal opportunities in both education and employment. The government, however, still faces huge challenges in integrating minorities with the community at large; our society’s lack of awareness and apprehension of minority cultures also compound to this difficulty. Furthermore, minorities are also prone to stigmatisation by the media, often citing people of South and East Asian descent to be more likely to commit crimes.
In the guise of the above, Junius Ho has been keeping in close contact with minority leaders in Hong Kong, ranging from Nepal, Pakistan, Indonesia, India and the Philippines, all in an effort to bridge the gap between different cultures in Hong Kong. Most recently, Junius Ho was invited to attend the National Day of Pakistan. During the flag-raising ceremony and his visit at Nepalese temples in Yuen Long, his team also attended the "Yulan Festival" and subsequently provided on-site pro bono legal support for ethnic minorities. Junius Ho sincerely believes that everyone can overcome their individual biases, and these misunderstandings between cultures are merely rooted in our ignorance. As we continue to reach out and understand each other better, so too will we make Hong Kong better.
