1:
1831
76.5 x 102.5 cm
Huile sur toile
Lepotvin often received official orders for historical themes, and he was at home with inspiring realist paintings, as well as romantic ones. His way of creation is influenced by Turner and Bonington both on a grand and micro scale."Evening on the Coast of La Manche" is a good example of learning from these masters. The light and shade arrangement of the picture has a decorative effect. The masts of the stranded ships cut through the overcast sky, the drooping sails fanned in tragic vain, and the hull remained forever on an unfinished course. As the busy
fishermen finish their work in the dark corner, our eyes are taken to the distant cliffs partially visible in the sun. These clever details show that his paintings stand up to bold partial scrutiny.
2:
Jules Noel (1818-1881)
La débarque de poisons
Vers 1852
50.5 x 32.5 cm
Huile sur toile
Born in Campere, France, Noel studied painting at an early age under the guidance of his father and is considered a pioneer of Impressionism.He specialises in two subjects: landscape and sea, and is based mainly in Normandy and Brittany. Noel participated in the Salon art exhibition between 1840 and1879, and he also taught painting. ln 1845 he was commissioned to create sculptural illustrations for Maurice Alhoy's Bagna: Historical Types, Mysterious Things.
Although born in a city, Noel prefers the seaside. His paintings often show waves crashing on rocks, stranded ships and shipwrecks. The traditional skills he mastered, after strict training, are still very heavy, similar to the painting style of the Dutch school. Driven by this style, his sea is often choppy, full of tragic colors, detailed and picturesque reality. The freedom of the frame reflects a romantic vision, like a meditation on fate, as if there is an established convention behind the genre, which is to express symbolic metaphysics.

(This will really help our people)...

THE WIND AND THE LEAVES
"Come, little leaves,"
said the wind one day.
"Come o'er the meadows with me,
and play;
Put on your dress
of red and gold
Summer is gone,
and the days grow cold."
Soon as the leaves
heard the wind's loud call,
Down they came fluttering,
one and all;
Over the brown fields
they danced and flew,
Singing the soft little songs
they knew.
"Cricket, good-by,
we've been friends so long;
Little brook, sing us
your farewell song, —
Say you are sorry
to see us go
Ah! you will miss us,
right well we know.
"Dear little lambs,
in your fleecy fold,
Mother will keep you
from harm and cold;
Fondly we've watched you
in vale and glade;
Say, will you dream
of our loving shade?"
Dancing and whirling,
the little leaves went;
Winter had called them,
and they were content.
Soon fast asleep
in their earthy beds,
The snow laid a coverlet
over their heads.
