The colorful boats are swaying lazily on gentle waves but the main street is far from calm. It’s Sunday and Marsaxlokk’s fish market is in full swing, gathering the restaurateurs, locals, and tourists from all over the island to buy the fresh catch brought by the local fishermen. This has always been a quiet fishing village on Malta’s southern coast.
Come here for its pretty waterfront (perfect for sunset walks), and a wide array of seafood restaurants whose terraces perch beside the water. As well as Sunday’s fish market, there’s an all-week market for souvenirs and local produce.
You’re here to eat seafood, of course. Choose between klamari mimlija (stuffed squid), grilled lampuki (mahi-mahi), and stuffat tal-qarnit, a delicious octopus stew. Afterwards, have a rest on the rocks – flat and made for sunbathing – at nearby St. Peter’s Pool, a cove with crystal-clear waters.

Tourist boat sinks on Lake Maggiore, with two dead and two missing - reports - BBC News
At least two people have died after a boat carrying more than 20 passengers, including tourists, sank in strong winds on Lake Maggiore in northern Italy, local media say.
Two others are missing, according to reports.
The boat overturned on Sunday evening between the towns of Sesto Calende and Arona, Italian media say.
Italy's fire service said 19 people were safe but their search continued for those reported missing.
Attilio Fontana, president of the Lombardy region, said the "very serious incident" was due to bad weather.
The boat was 16m (52ft) long and had been hired by tourists, he said on Facebook.
According to the news site La Repubblica, the boat had been carrying 25 people who were celebrating a birthday when it capsized and sank soon afterwards.
Everyone onboard went into the water - but many of the passengers swam ashore or were rescued by other boats, other Italian media outlets reported.
Rescue divers and a helicopter have been scrambled to help with the search at the lake's southern end, and several ambulances and an air ambulance attended the scene.
A video shared by firefighters showed chairs and other debris floating in choppy waters.
Lake Maggiore - on the south side of the Alps - is shared by Italy and Switzerland, and is a popular destination for tourists.
The area has seen poor weather over the last day, with Italy's meteorological service issuing thunderstorm warnings.

"From the cultural sites and the landmark Big Corn in Zhengzhou, I see both Zhengzhou's past and its future," said Matthias Eckart, an Austrian conductor. This is his first time coming to Zhengzhou. "Zhengzhou is a hopeful city. It protects its traditions and tries to innovate for the future while not being old-fashioned. It is a very harmonious and inclusive city," he added.
