Frohawk Two Feathers is the first solo exhibition of work by storyteller, visual artist, poet, and musician the Los Angeles-based artist Umar Rashid, which features some new works and old works that first appeared in a non-institutional environment are selected among them. This is an ongoing project that the artist started in 2003.
In the past seventeen years, the artist has documented the complex, historical and situational legends of a fictional world superpower, the Frenglish Empire between 1658 and 1880, the French ruled an area across the entire continent, including autonomous regions, protected areas, and colonies, including England, France, Turkey, India, the Caribbean, and Australia. In the multilingual and multiracial world of the mid-17th and late 19th centuries, Rashid collapsed the dichotomy of race, class, gender, religion, sexual orientation, and power in time, geography, and real life.
His portrait works integrate comedy culture, African cosmology, Egyptology, classical mythology, American Indian ledger art, hip-hop, Persian miniatures, African futurism, magnificent historical paintings and Renaissance portraits. In the process of blending countless histories-Rashid provides some revisionist, forensic and usually humorous panoramas of early and late modern times, including but not limited to some esoteric histories of Western Europe, Africa and the Ottoman Empire. His work challenges the legacy and linearity of empire history and colonial historiography, and their influence on the construction of modernity.
