Buddhists believe that “all things are created by the mind alone”. In fact, external circumstances reflect our inner state. Different people will have different feelings in the same circumstance. Optimists always see the bright side of a situation while pessimists always see the negative side.
Wumen Huikai, a well-known Chan master in the Song Dynasty (960-1279), wrote a poem: “We have flowers in the spring and the moon in the autumn, breeze in the summer and snow in the winter. Whenever it is, it’s a happy time, if we have nothing to bother ourselves.” Actually, the flowers in the spring and the moon in autumn have no love, nor do the breeze in the summer and snow in the winter have affection. It is our mind that has inclinations.
The Heart of Prajna Paramita Sutra says, “(the Bodhisattva is) unimpeded in his mind. Because there is no impediment, he is not afraid, and he leaves distorted dream-thinking far behind. Ultimately there comes Nirvana!” Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated. All is the outcome of a preoccupied mind.
